Investigations of tropospheric aerosols by lidar

A Raman-lidar, operating at 3 different wavelengths is used to analyse tropospheric aerosol occurrences, particle properties, as well as water vapour in the lower troposphere and thin cirrus clouds. Aerosol and their interaction with clouds remain one of the important shortcomings of current climate models. In addition to aerosol in-situ measurements performed by external partners in Ny-Ålesund, in this project aerosol occurrences are monitored and particle properties derived by Raman lidar.
In this project regular measurements through the whole year are performed. While most of these measurements are performed by the station engineer, intensive campaign in cooperation with our international partners are planned.
