From land to sea: Identifying and quantifying weathering fluxes from glaciated catchments to the ocean in the Kongsfjorden Bay

Laura Wehmann (Stony Brook Univ.) / Grit Steinhöfel(AWI)

In this project, we propose to continue investigating the land-sediment-ocean system of polar fjords with the aim of understanding chemical weathering and diagenetic processes involved in element cycling and supply to the ocean. In 2024, our focus will be on identifying the main weathering processes and reaction products in fjord sediments, evaluate what controls spatial changes in these processes, and to constrain the effects of submarine and reverse weathering on the sequestration and boundary exchange of key elements (Li, Si, Sr, Rb, Ba, and Ti). We will use a multi-proxy geochemical approach and carry out incubation experiments using sediments from Kongsfjorden and Lilliehkööfjorden. The study will provide new insight into the response of chemical weathering processes in marine sediments under a changing Arctic climate.
