Understanding Arctic amplification through air-mass transformations CMET balloon campaign 2024

Felix Pithan (AWI)

Relatively warm and moist air masses advected into the central Arctic ocean in winter cool and dry over a timescale of several days. This air-mass transformation is driven by radiative cooling and controlled by an interplay of boundary-layer and cloud processes that is not well understood and often poorly represented in climate models. In this campaign, we aim to obtain air-mass following observations of the air-mass transformation, which will be used to improve our understanding of the underlying processes.
