Svalbard Environmental Neutrons

Martin Schr n (UFZ Leipzig)

The dynamics of soil moisture, snow, permafrost, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Arctic regions are strongly influenced by global change. For the development of a better understanding of the interrelationships, cross-compartment monitoring approaches are being tested. This project aims for long-term operation of a Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS) for monitoring soil moisture and snow water equivalent. Furthermore, a mobile CRNS will be used to investigate the spatial distribution of neutron and muon radiation, a Lidar to measure the spatial distribution of snow height, and a modernized Bonner Sphere System to monitor the polar cosmic-ray energy spectrum.
